Taylor’s Mistake/Te Onepoto

Taylor’s Mistake or Te Onepoto has an interesting origin. The Māori name, Te Onepoto, is defined as short or little beach. This definition depicts the small beach of Taylor’s Mistake on the other side of the hill from Sumner. The English name, Taylor’s mistake comes from the name of the master of a vessel which ran through Taylor’s Mistake in search of Sumner Bar.

Lifeguards monitor Taylor’s Mistake during summer weekends as well as busy school holiday weekdays. Also, nearby you’ll find an admirable walking track around Godley Head.
