Situated in Christchurch’s south-east, 10 km away from the city centre, Sumner Beach is a gently sloping beach with fine grey sand. Due to the beach’s ocean exposure, it is a popular surfing destination on its west side with the high surf which tends to form in some swell conditions.
To the rear of the beach, sand dunes pack the river valley and to reduce coastal erosion, a sea wall and wide esplanade exists across the beach’s length of 400m. With its own surf lifesaving club, Sumner’s lifeguards patrol flagged sections from November to March each year.
Sumner Beach is one of Christchurch’s icons loved my many locals and visitors for more than 150 years.
