Ōtamahua, the Maori name for Quail Island, means ‘place where children collect sea eggs’. It is a small island in the inner harbour which can be accessed through a short ferry ride from Lyttelton. Safe swimming opportunities and sheltered picnic spot are available throughout the island harbour.
Quail Island is the largest island in Canterbury, yet suitable for a day trip. Bird/wildlife watching and walking/tramping options are available also.
