Canterbury and the South Island’s most popular beach is, by far, Caroline Bay in Timaru. ‘The Bay’ as named by locals is the only sandy beach from the Banks Peninsula all the way down to Oamaru, and is known for its stunning landscape views of the snow-topped mountains in winter and the area’s greenery in summer. The beach is also a popular swimming area.
Caroline Bay’s history dates back to hundreds of years with the first annual summer carnival run by volunteers in the surrounding area. Concerts, rides, activities and games attract many people to attend the event each year, to experience the 16 days of Summer fun.
In 2010, Caroline Bay’s dunes underwent a restoration project including the planting of native sand-binding plants. This award winning project means that the plants are now considered the most varied in New Zealand.
